Hluhluwe / Umfolozi : Monday 01 December 2014

A quiet morning today was the lull before the storm !! Not that our morning was that bad actually – we got a black rhino close to our vehicle near Masinda Camp and the general game was quite abundant. All the action happened when we crossed the main bridge of the Black Umfoloz river. There was a huge elephant herd on the left bank and on the right bank there was an equally impressive buffalo herd, four rhinos, at least 10 lions and a couple more elephants for good measure !! Well, first the lions chased the buffaloes, then the buffaloes returned fire with fire…and then a huge bull elephant came crashing out of the reeds and charged the lions !! The rhinos kept their distance but were totally unconcerned at the mayhem around them, and then, to cap it all, two zebras poke their noses into the river bed, had one look at what was going down and bolted directly into the path of the lions in the other side of the river bank. This was all too much for the lions who just sat down, seemingly dazed ( but maybe spoilt for choice ) and observed the scene unfolding in front of them. It was a half hour of once in a life time entertainment which left our guests shaking their heads in amazement.
