Hluhluwe / Umfolozi : Tuesday 02 December 2014

We had a cracking day out there today….almost as if the animals were giving us a Christmas present after a year of amazing sightings !! First off we bumped into a pack of 10 wild dogs near the Centenary Centre turnoff. There were two adults and 8 cubs and they entertained us for 15 minutes before moving off into the bush to find some breakfast !! Then, at the main Umfolozi bridge we were lucky enough to find the “Bridge” lion pride chilling in the river bed. They looked as if they had eaten recently judging from their fat bellies so we moved off quite quickly in the knowledge that they were going nowhere any time soon. A little later we had a fantastic lion sighting just outside Mpila. He was a huge male with an almost black mane and must have weighed in at around 250 kg ! He sat there 10 meters away from our vehicle, totally unfazed by us, and then got up and sauntered down the road towards marker 12. We followed him for about 10 minutes before he moved off into the bush. Lots of eles, rhino and buffalo today as well and also two black rhinos. See what I mean by a cracking day…!!
