Hluhluwe / Umfolozi : Thursday 04 December 2014

As much as we love doing tours in the Hluhluwe / Umfolozi complex it’s heartbreaking to see virtually every river in the Park as dry as a bone. People who have spent a life time in the area don’t recall seeing anything like it and unless we get good rains soon a catastrophe looms. Today we got the “bridge” lion pride again at the main Umfolozi bridge. They had killed a buffalo during the night and were still busy dining out on the carcass when we saw them at around 05h30 this morning. A little later we caught a brief glimpse of two lions near view point 17 in the south. There were plenty of rhino and buffalo sightings today and at Umganu a large elephant herd was in the river trying to get at whatever water was still in the river. When we passed through Mpila camp on our way to lunch we came across a big bull elephant lying completely on it’s side sleeping under a tree. Despite the dry weather we stopped at an aloe plant, also near Mpila and saw a beautiful yellow flower emerging from the stem.
